Assumption of the Virgin with the Trinity and musical angels Guglielmo Caccia (Monabone, 1568 - Moncalvo, 1625) and workshop Oil on canvas (125 x 100 cm - Framed 137 x 112 cm) Full details of the work (click HERE) We present this interesting painting, executed in the early 17th century, depicting the dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin into heaven, according to which Mary, the mother of Jesus, after the course of her earthly life, is welcomed into Paradise, both with soul and body. What makes our composition precious is the depiction of Mary crowned and lying on a throne of clouds, flanked by the three components of the Holy Trinity: God the Father blessing, Christ with the globus cruciger, and the white dove of the Holy Spirit. The scene is richly orchestrated, with a blaze of angels and cherubs literally framing it: in the upper part they welcome the Virgin into heaven in attitudes of devotion, while in the lower part they are engaged in the enchantment of a celestial melody, a sort of reflection of Paradise. The author has created a suggestive image with a concert of angels, harmonically arranged in a semicircle, intoning music produced by the sound of lutes, violins, guitars, flutes and songs of praise to the Virgin. The work highlights the unmistakable stylistic features, as well as the executive quality, of the production of Guglielmo Caccia known as "il Moncalvo", one of the most famous and important exponents of the Piedmontese Counter-Reformation, trained in the Vercelli school but sensitive to the influences of the great artists of the sixteenth century. The painting, of refined execution, probably executed by the master himself or with the collaboration of one of his students, is an excellent example of his stylistic imprint. Moncalvo founded a school of painting and among his most famous students is his daughter Maddalena (who spent most of her life in the Ursuline convent of Moncalvo), as well as Francesco Fea and Giovanni Crosio, with whom he created numerous altarpieces and religious canvases, standing out for his frescoes made in churches between Piedmont and Lombardy between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
