Giulio Carpioni (Venice 1613 - Vicenza 1678) - Madonna and Child with Saints Joseph, Francis, Dominic and Anthony of Padua. 61 x 37.5 cm. Oil painting on canvas, unframed. - The painting is certainly attributed to Giulio Carpioni (Venice 1613 - Vicenza 1678) based on stylistic comparisons (see - “The Saints Vitus, Modestus and Crescentia”, Church of Saints Felice and Fortunato, Vicenza; and “Madonna and Child, St. John the Baptist and St. Anthony”, Gallerie dell’Accademia, Venice.) - Reference bibliography: G. M. Pilo, “Giulio Carpioni, all the paintings”, Alfieri Editore, 1961. Condition report: Lined canvas. Good state of preservation of the painted surface. Giulio Carpioni (Venice 1613 – Vicenza 1678) was an important master of the Venetian Baroque. Originally from Venice, he trained under the guidance of Padovanino, where he learned the importance of using colour from the study of the great masters of the 16th century. He later travelled to Rome, where he learned the lesson of Roman classicism, which heavily influenced his entire production. He settled in Vicenza, a city populated by wealthy and cultured commissioners, where he was greatly appreciated for his elegant and refined style. Imbued with classicism, his works propose balanced and harmonious compositions, which envelop the figures represented in an enveloping and almost ethereal atmosphere. Carpioni became particularly famous for his mythological representations, depicting bacchanals, games of putti and various allegories, but given his fame, ecclesiastical commissions for the various Venetian and Vicentine churches could not be missing. The our painting could be reminiscent of a preparatory sketch for an altarpiece, but given its meticulousness and the lack of a final realization, it is much more likely that it is a commissioned work intended for private devotion. At the top centre we find the Madonna and Child, depicted in a unique pose in the master's production and surrounded by the saints Joseph, Francis, Dominic and Anthony of Padua. The St. Joseph in profile specularly replicates the figure of St. Vitus made for the altarpiece of the church of Saints Felice and Fortunato in Vicenza, while other numerous iconographic cues can be traced back to the altarpiece raff. “Madonna and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Anthony of Padua” from the Cathedral of Vicenza and now in the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice (such as the posture of our St. Anthony or the figure of St. Joseph kneeling and offering a flower identical to the St. Anthony of Venice). - All shipments within the EU are free and professionally packaged. - Each item is sold with a certificate of authenticity with legal validity. - Further information on the condition report is available on request. - Viezzi Arte guarantees quality and professionalism at competitive prices, contact us at info@viezziarte.it or via What’sApp on +39 3402841279. *Message to non-Italian buyers: Please note that this work has not yet obtained a free export certificate from Italy from the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage.
