Giulio Carpioni (Venice 1613 – Vicenza 1678) was an important master of the Venetian Baroque. Originally from Venice, he trained under Padovanino, where he learned the importance of using color from the study of the great masters of the sixteenth century. He later traveled to Rome, where he learned the lesson of Roman classicism, which heavily influenced his entire production. He settled in Vicenza, a city populated by a wealthy and cultured clientele, where he was extremely appreciated for his elegant and refined style.
Imbued with classicism, his works propose balanced and harmonious compositions, which envelop the figures represented in an enveloping and almost ethereal atmosphere. Carpioni became particularly famous for his mythological representations, depicting bacchanals, games of cherubs and various allegories, but given his fame, there was no shortage of ecclesiastical commissions destined for the various Venetian and Vicentine churches.
Our arched palette might resemble a preparatory sketch for an altarpiece, but given its precision and the lack of a final realization, it is much more likely that it is a commissioned work intended for private devotion. In the upper center we find the Madonna and Child, represented in a unique pose in the master's production and surrounded by Saints Joseph, Francis, Dominic and Anthony of Padua. The S. Joseph in profile mirrors the figure of S. Vito made for the altarpiece of the church of Ss. Felice and Fortunato in Vicenza, while other very numerous iconographic ideas can be traced back to the altarpiece raff. "Madonna and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Anthony of Padua" from the Cathedral of Vicenza and now at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice (such as the posture of our S. Antonio or the figure of the kneeling S. Giuseppe offering a flower identical to the S. Antonio of Venice).
