Painting, oil on flowered alabaster “Death of Saint Joseph” - 17th century. This is an antique devotional painting depicting the scene of the Death of Saint Joseph, a common subject in sacred art from the 17th century onwards. The painting shows Saint Joseph dying, lying on a bed, assisted by Jesus and the Virgin Mary. This iconography emphasizes Joseph's role as the patron saint of the dying. Jesus is depicted next to him, while Mary stands on the other side of the bed. In the upper part, angels and cherubs on clouds attend the scene with God the Father blessing. The alabaster slab has broken over time and has been glued and subsequently applied to a slate slab. The painting is enclosed in a small non-coeval gilded wooden frame. The use of translucent stone as a support gives the image a unique luminous effect. Flowered alabaster is an ornamental stone characterized by a set of circular spots or stripes (depending on the orientation of the rock cut). Marble workers used to distinguish numerous varieties of this alabaster, obtained simply by cutting the rock according to different inclinations, which they indicated with fancy names (such as: "eye-catching", "flowered", "tortoiseshell"). Alabaster is considered a precious and prized material, especially for its beauty, the translucence that diffuses light and its long artistic history. Used since ancient times (Egyptians, Etruscans) and rediscovered in the Renaissance for sacred works of art.
