Saint George
Follower of Giovanni Battista Cima, known as Cima da CONEGLIANO (Conegliano approximately 1449 - Conegliano approximately 1517)
Oil on canvas (126 x 49 cm - Framed 143 x 65 cm)
The painting immortalizes Saint George, a noble knight of Christian faith, made famous by a legend that arose during the Crusades, which saw him as the protagonist of an epic feat, victorious over a fearsome Dragon that held an entire kingdom under siege.
Full of symbolic meanings of the struggle between Good and Evil, this enterprise made him a favorite subject in art, especially from the Renaissance onwards, as it allowed him to personify ideals and values both of chivalrous and religious nature.
The young Saint, with an erect and proud posture, is portrayed here in his shining armor while holding the long spear with both hands, the weapon he will use to defeat the dragon. His bust, slightly turned to his right, pivots on his legs, which are firmly open in a compass shape.
As a whole, the young man's attitude expresses an idea of strength and moral steadfastness.
In the background, the princess watches with devotion the hero awaiting his help, as she is held hostage by the ferocious beast; behind her is the kingdom of Selem with its high walls, which the hero will manage to liberate and convert to Christianity.
Our painting is an excellent quality replica taken from the famous 'Triptych of the Madonna and Child between Saints George and James', created by Cima da Conegliano around 1517 and now kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Caen, France)*.
The analysis of the general stylistic characteristics of the work allows us to propose a dating of the painting to the late 17th century or the early 18th century, presuming that we should refer to an artist marked by an experience gained in the Venetian area or by knowledge of 15th-century Venetian culture, characterized by a pictorial style still marked by a refined classicism.
