His training began in Pesaro, his hometown, under the guidance of Giovanni Giacomo Pandolfi (1567 - 1636). The commission of the Pala Olivieri to Guido Reni introduced Renian painting to Pesaro and Cantarini; this prompted him to move to Bologna and enter the great master's workshop.
