VICTORIOUS SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL - COPPER PAINTING - Bernardino Cesari
Fascinating antique oil painting on copper depicting a majestic Archangel Michael in a triumphant pose. The artwork displays an angelic figure surrounded by a golden luminosity that enhances his divine presence. His head is turned downwards, his features are sweet and refined, his curls are golden, and his head is enveloped by a halo. He wears an elegant dark armor embellished with golden stars and a red cloak delicately moved by the wind. At the bottom of the scene, Saint Michael dominates and crushes a demonic creature, a symbol of the victory of good over evil. The composition is rich in detail, from the reflections on the armor to the delicate nuances of the face, typical of late Mannerist sacred painting. The copper is attributed to Bernardino Cesari (1571-1622), master and protagonist of the Roman school between Mannerism and early Baroque, and brother of the celebrated Cavalier d'Arpino. The quality of the drawing, the use of radiant light, and the refinement of the figures fully fall within his pictorial language.
