A painting of great scenic effect, depicting a still life composed of an opulent display of objects, including various fine draperies embroidered and edged with trimmings and golden fringes, parts of a dark parade armor with gold edging, sculptures, an altar adorned with winged sphinxes, and precious chased metal vases.
These images, in addition to the aesthetics of decoration, are full of allegorical meanings, to the point of being able to interpret these compositions as refined Vanitas: it is in fact a sort of allegory that likely invited the observer to meditate on the futility of vain glory (which here is symbolized by weapons or the altar) or earthly riches (objects and precious fabrics).
The pictorial characteristics declare its execution by a capable 17th century author of the Italian school, whose characters evoke the teachings of the best Flemish masters of previous generations. The clear post-Caravaggio Roman cadences are then visible in the contrasts of light and in the dense pictorial matter: all reasons that allow us to assign the painting to the circle of Antonio Tibaldi (Rome, c. 1635 - post 1675), a talented painter, follower of Francesco Fieravino known as il Maltese and therefore an appreciated painter of still lifes similar to those of his master.
Active mainly in Rome, the painter was extremely prolific and benefited from extraordinary success among the collectors of the time. His presence and the notoriety achieved are testified by the multiple compositions that have been returned to him in recent times, kept in the most important Roman public and private collections of the time, such as those of the Albani, Barberini, Chigi and Colonna families.
