The Allegory of Sculpture, by Paolo Caliari, known as Veronese (Verona 1528 – Venice 1588)
The Allegory of Sculpture by Paolo Caliari, known as Veronese (Verona 1528 – Venice 1588) Venetian school of the early 18th century Oil on copper (cm. 97 x 63 - with frame cm. 110 x 74) Full details of the artwork (click HERE) A seductive female figure, richly adorned and dressed as an ancient Goddess "in Venetian style", with a refined updo, leans on a fluted column base, stepping on it. Her left hand, partially veiled, rests on the column. Her gaze is directed towards her son, whom she is still breastfeeding, with her breast barely uncovered. He is presented as a young sculptor, but still needs many lessons to finish the sketched clay model of a satyr that he is showing to his mother, offering her the modeling tool as if to ask for help. The little one, almost naked and in balance, also needs protection, and rests the damp clay of the model on his cloak to avoid getting dirty, while he too steps on the architectural frame. At the top right, in a context of ancient ruins, a laughing head of a Satyr smiles at the scene. Of excellent quality, the artwork is created using the oil on copper technique, which is characterized by a chromatic brilliance and intense luminosity typical of this support, features that give great preciousness and charm to the work. Our artist, working in the first part of the eighteenth century, has masterfully proposed this subject, referring to the series of four allegories made by Paolo Veronese (1528-1588), one of the greatest Venetian artists of the Renaissance. Specifically, he takes up the only one with a female subject, now kept in Verbania at Villa San Remigio, entitled 'Allegory of Sculpture'. The details include a photo of the original work along with the pendant of the Allegory of Astronomy.
