Thanks to the comparison with his autograph works, of which it will be said, this painting can be traced back to the hand of the Milanese Giovanni Crivelli (Milan, ? - Parma, 1760) known as Crivellino to distinguish him from his father Angelo Maria, also a painter and known as Crivellone (news from 1662 - 1730 ca.). 

The confirmation of the paternity of the Crivellino comes mainly on the basis of the comparison with some paintings in the Cova Minotti collection in Milan, depicting a Boar assaulted by dogs (signed and dated "Gio. Crivelli fec.1720") and a Bear attacked by dogs. Close analogies are visible, in the setting of the work, in the composition and in the reproposition of the same types of dogs and bison, in particular in another work of the same collection depicting an Assault on the bison.

These works testify in the corpus of Crivellino the reference to the international hunting culture, in particular to the Flemish, almost with the intention - as noted by Arisi in the aforementioned monograph dedicated to the two Crivelli - to compete with those models. Canvases much appreciated by contemporaries and the great aristocracy; Lanzi recalls the Crivellino, among other things, very active at the Farnese court in Parma.

The canvas in question depicts a fight between dogs and a bull in which they fully manifest the expressive power and strength that the painting of Crivellino can achieve. The three dogs, caught in different poses, growling, with their mouths open seem to surround the bull in difficulty. The brushstroke is fast, yet defined, and vibrates, conveying further excitement to the dynamism inherent in the scene. The rendering of the mantles, of great quality, seems alive, rendering the real idea of the hair of the animals. The bull, in difficulty, seems to rotate its head ready to collapse on the ground. The size of the animals in struggle, dominate the surrounding landscape, focusing attention on combat, however fascinating the architectural ruins and the fade in the distance of the sky. A figure of shepherd walking while observing the scene from a certain distance further enriches the composition.
