Antonio Joli (Modena 1700 – Naples 1777) was an Italian painter and scenographer, among the most acclaimed protagonists of vedutismo in Europe. Born in Modena, he moved to Rome in 1720 to perfect his technique at the school of Pannini, then moved to Venice in 1732 where he worked as a scenographer and came into contact with artists such as Canaletto and Bernardo Bellotto. This mix of influences allowed him to emerge among the many landscape and architectural capriccio painters, giving his paintings an increasingly broad perspective and flooded with light.
His fame grew along with his important commissions between London and the Court of Spain, where he was the first scenographer of the Buen Retiro theater. He returned to Venice in 1754 where he was one of the founders of the Academy of Painting and Sculpture, then spent his last period in Naples where he was appointed chief scenographer of the Real Teatro di San Carlo, as well as becoming a highly famous vedutista for the most prestigious patrons and noble travelers of the Grand Tour.
Our painting, rediscovered and authenticated by Prof. Dario Succi, is placed in the last period of Joli's activity, as evidenced by the evident similarities with the scenographic paintings kept in the collections of the royal palaces of Naples and Caserta dating back to 1776. It depicts a lively scenography perfectly balanced between monumental ruins and characters in attitudes of daily life, with a typical marine view in the background with blue tones in symbiosis with the sky.
