View painter of the 18th-19th centuryPanoramic view of Florence Oil on canvas 32 x 51 cm. - In gilded frame 42 x 63 cm. Hampel: Gemälde 19./20. Jahrhundert, 21.02.2024, lot 992 (estimate 5000-7000 euro) - link - The view captures the essence of a timeless city, offering a panoramic glimpse of Florence, immortalized from one of the most evocative panoramic points, most likely from the Boboli Gardens (or the Bardini Gardens), the large park with tree-lined avenues commissioned by the Medici family and built starting in the second half of the sixteenth century, always favored by Florentines for their walks and by artists to position their easel and portray one of the most beautiful cities in the world. In the foreground, among the lush vegetation and tall cypresses that frame the scene, the work is animated by elegant figures, probably intent on enjoying the peace and beauty of the place, including elegantly dressed women, some children and two monks on the right side. From this position we can admire the iconic monuments of the city, allowing the gaze to rest on the beating heart of Florence, dominated by the imposing Brunelleschi's Dome and Giotto's Bell Tower with the Duomo, which stand majestically among the roofs of the city. Then continues with the elegant fourteenth-century building of Palazzo Vecchio, from which towers the Arnolfo's tower, once also a prison, over 90 meters high. It is an image that evokes the artistic grandeur and history of Florence, inviting you to lose yourself in the contemplation of a panorama that has inspired artists and poets for centuries and which extends to the gentle surrounding hills, such as Fiesole and Settignano. The presence of human figures immersed in the landscape, the evocative atmosphere and the celebration of natural and architectural beauty align with the themes and aesthetics of Romanticism, with the light and colors contributing to creating an evocative atmosphere. Although with a romantic touch, the painting shows an attention to detail in the rendering of the buildings and figures, still maintaining a close link with the tradition of view painting, which aimed to capture specific views of cities and landscapes.
