This pair of fascinating landscapes, executed with elegant Rocaille taste and complete with pleasant decorative frames, are conceived with the scenographic sensibility of the most classic Venetian landscape tradition of the first part of the 18th century.
The works, of good pictorial quality, show evident connections with the pictorial styles of Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676 – Venice 1730), one of the most important protagonists of Venetian landscape painting in this period.
The perspective setting characterized by the succession of hills and rocky slopes, on whose background the mountains can be glimpsed, with refined pale blue hues, is also modulated by the harmonic sequence of lights and shadows that create a remarkable effect of depth. Among the innovations introduced by Ricci in landscape painting is the experimentation with light in its possibilities of atmospheric rendering.
The works under examination share many details with many others by the master, such as the mountain ranges that dissolve into the background, the trees placed in the foreground laterally, as well as the small figures that animate the scene, in addition to the compositional cut of the view that expands in depth in a modulated succession of perspective planes.
After a stay in England and Holland, the direct knowledge of Nordic painting – in particular of the works of Pieter Mulier and Jacob de Heusch – Ricci moved towards a new experimentation in the rendering of atmospheric luminosity. This new landscape style was amalgamated with the style in vogue in Venetian production, creating an unprecedented interpretation of landscape painting, destined to enjoy extraordinary fortune, and which naturally inspired many painters close to him.
Our two works, created by an author who certainly must have seen and studied his compositions, are an excellent testimony to this, a combination of Venetian, Roman and Flemish painting of great charm.
