The painting, depicting a landscape, is enlivened by several figures, travelers and shepherds and a small group of sheep, located near wooded fronds that, on the right, draw a backdrop to the view. A river with a small waterfall crosses the frame; beyond that, a mountainous landscape fades towards the horizon.
The color scheme of the canvas is characterized by bluish tones, with which the painter paints the sky marked by new white and vaporous clouds, outlines the rocks and mountains, makes the surface of the river water reflective. This pictorial genre became widespread during the 18th century, in which various painters were active, mostly dedicated to producing paintings of landscapes of purely decorative taste.
We believe the work to be from the Piedmont area, with stylistic and chromatic analogies with the paintings of Giovanni Domenico Gambone, a landscape painter from the mid-eighteenth century, belonging to a family of Lugano origin and linked to the Turin artistic environment. Gambone was born in Turin around the year 1720 and died there on October 25, 1793. He married Giovanna Battista, niece of Pietro Domenico Ollivero, in 1757; he is also documented as a witness to Ollivero's will on November 15, 1754: a significant link with the great Turin artist. Gambone is active in the decoration of the Chambers of the New Archives of Palazzo Reale in Turin alongside Ollivero and his father Pietro Francesco, also a painter. Payments for his works at Venaria Reale and in Turin, in Palazzo Chiablese, are also known.
The work, in good condition, is particularly pleasing for its decorative character.
