Giuseppe Zais (Forno di Canale 1709 - Treviso 1784) - Landscape with shepherds and spinner. 48 x 63.5 cm without frame, 59 x 74.5 cm with frame. Oil on canvas, in carved and gilded wooden frame. - The painting is accompanied by a critical essay by Prof. Ugo Ruggieri. Condition report: Canvas lined. Good condition of the painted surface. Giuseppe Zais (Forno di Canale 1709 – Treviso 1781) was one of the most famous Venetian landscape painters, known for his depictions of bucolic scenes featuring stylized figures of shepherds, flocks, and washerwomen set in an idyllic rural landscape inspired by the Venetian countryside. He trained in Venice, observing the works of his illustrious predecessor Marco Ricci, from whom Zais clearly draws inspiration, and was a contemporary of Francesco Zuccarelli, from whom he drew the grace he achieved in his most refined works. Zais's style was distinguished by a depiction of the Arcadian landscape that was much more rural than his contemporaries; his compositions, although inspired by Rococo, are enveloped in a sense of realism imparted by the use of more marked and brown tones and by a thick and pasty application of color. Our painting is a work of high quality, executed by the master from Belluno in the fullness of his maturity. The protagonists of the scene are the four figures in the center, well described and delineated by Zais in a moment of peace and serenity on the bank of the stream. We find a mother with her child who have come to stock up on water from the river, while behind them a spinner is being approached by a young man lying on the lawn with a hat. The whole scene is enveloped in a landscape executed with vibrant brushstrokes and not delineated, which confers an intimistic and idealized sense to the whole representation. - All shipments within the EU are free and professionally packaged. - Each item is sold with a certificate of authenticity with legal validity. - Further details on the condition report are available upon request. - Viezzi Arte guarantees quality and professionalism at competitive prices, contact us at info@viezziarte.it or via WhatsApp at +39 3402841279. *Message for non-Italian buyers: Please note that this work has not yet obtained the free export certificate from Italy at the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage.
