It is easy to identify the effigies in this fascinating pair of portraits as the rulers of France, namely Louis XV of Bourbon, who ascended the throne in 1715 at the age of thirteen and was nicknamed the "Well-Beloved", and Maria Leszczynska, Queen Consort of France and Navarre, and daughter of King Stanislaus I of Poland.
The Queen is depicted in three-quarter figure, with a smiling face turned towards the viewer. She wears a wig in shades of gray with her hair gathered around the nape of her neck and a diadem on her head, and pendants in her ears. She wears a dress with a wide red velvet neckline, brocaded with gold threads, with rich lace sleeves, and a bodice ornamented with a bib with diamond and pearl jewelry. A blue velvet cloak embroidered with the heraldic lilies of the Crown of France and lined with ermine rests on her shoulders.
The monarch, also immortalized in three-quarter view, wears a cuirass over a coat, with a blue sash on his shoulder and a white collar around his neck. His face shows the same serene expression that illuminates his consort's face.
It is presumed that these portraits are a derivation of a pair of official paintings of the sovereigns most likely executed by Jean-Baptiste van Loo (1684-1745), prototypes that are traditionally dated to the year of their marriage, 1725, and of which several smaller reproductions are known.
Similar features of the rulers can be seen in paintings executed by contemporaries, such as in the canvases by Charles Van Loo (collections of the Palace of Versailles, Salon of Mars), Jean Marc Nattier (Muzeum Narodowe, Warsaw), Alexis-Simon Belle (Trianon). We can name another painter who dedicated himself to these subjects, namely Pierre Gobert (Fontainebleau 1662 - Paris 1744), whose portraiture shows close stylistic affinities with our two effigies.
A portrait painter among the most significant and sought-after of his time and a great interpreter of the French school, working in France at the courts of Louis XIV and then Louis XV, during his career he obtained a large number of commissions, with a workload that implied the existence of a complex workshop: it is therefore likely to hypothesize a realization of the present ones by one of his direct and faithful collaborators.
The pair of works is presented in a good state of preservation, with beautiful carved and gilded wooden frames, also in excellent condition.
