Beautiful oil on canvas portrait, accompanied by a contemporary carved and gilded wooden frame in gold leaf. On the back of the painting, according to the present label, the work depicts the philanthropist Johann Caspar Schweirer, born in Zurich and died in Paris in 1811, who was the adoptive father of the Swiss-French painter Anna Barbara Bansi (1777-1863). In the portrait, Schweirer is depicted with clothing and hairstyle typical of the mid-18th century: white wig, closed coat and white jacket with fabric on the front. The crossed hands and the elusive, almost pensive gaze contribute to making the painting realistic, highlighting a skillful use of chiaroscuro and great pictorial skill. As indicated by the plaque on the front of the painting, the work is attributed to the artist J.H.W. Tischbein (1751-1829), a well-known German painter and engraver, famous for his historical paintings, mythological subjects and portraits, including those of his friend Goethe. For this reason, it is a painting of great historical uniqueness, to be ascribed around the second half of the 18th century. Measurements: Overall H x W x D 87.5 x 83 x 6cm; H x W of the work only 74 x 70cm
