Portrait of the Duke of Metternich, early 18th century
Beautiful oval oil on canvas portrait, set in an oval frame made of carved wood and gilded with genuine gold leaf, with the upper and lower parts decorated with vegetal scrolls and a shell. On the back there are inscriptions that identify the subject of the portrait, the artist, and the dating of the work. The painting depicts the Duke of Metternich, ambassador of the Baron of Neuchâtel, represented with a large wig and wearing a cuirass, with his gaze directed towards the painter and the viewer. There is a great use of chiaroscuro and detail, making the painting exquisitely made, as well as of significant historical uniqueness. The portrait is attributed to the French painter I. Ruber, as signed on the back, active around the beginning of the 18th century (c. 1703).
