"Crucifixion of Christ"
Oil on panel
France, Limoges
Late 18th century
Panel 35 x 25
Frame 50 x 40
Excellent condition
A splendid oil painting on panel depicting the Crucifixion of Christ.
The scene, as per tradition, shows Mary Magdalene kneeling at the foot of the cross, sharing her grief with the Madonna and Saint John.
Behind the Virgin, on the left side, the pious women are in despair, Mary of Cleophas, sister of the Virgin, and Mary Salome, the mother of James and John.
On the right side, some Roman soldiers in their armor observe the scene.
The pictorial finesse is remarkable in all the details of the characters, the vegetation on the ground, and the blue sky dotted with clouds.
But the characteristic that clearly distinguishes this depiction of Christ on the Cross from paintings with the same subject is the exceptional chromatism and the truly unusual luminosity of the panel in the description of this dramatic episode.
The panel clearly shows the same chromatic tones used by the French Masters of Limoges for their enamels and porcelains, with an excellent combination of colors to create strong contrasts and a perfect three-dimensional effect. The excellent conditions allow a complete reading of the work in every detail.
