Splendid and particularly lively coastal landscape, rich in views and scenes in a port setting.
The depth that the talented author manages to give to this magnificent composition is truly remarkable.
The work is characterized by the contrast between the shadowy areas in the foreground, teeming with figures and boats, and the luminous background of the coast with the clear sky.
The ruins of a turreted fortress stand out as protagonists in the glow of a fantastic atmosphere.
The references to the famous seascapes revisited in the eighteenth and nineteenth-century style of Salvator Rosa are evident, which the Author wants to pay homage to with this work.
It is a very fascinating painting executed in an excellent manner by the famous Dutch master Abraham Teerlink, whose works are exhibited in various European museums, first and foremost the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
The canvas is in excellent condition complete with an antique gilded frame.
Author's biography taken from Wikipedia:
Abraham Teerlink (Dordrecht, 5 November 1776) - Rome, 26 May 1857 or July 1857) was a 19th-century painter from the Northern Netherlands.
After showing interest in the arts, he was instructed by Michiel Versteegh and later by J. Kelderman and Arie Lamme.
He began with copies of works by famous artists (under the supervision of the aforementioned tutors), but developed as a landscape painter, with his landscape compositions often featuring livestock.
In 1807 he received a Prix de Rome as one of the three young painters in the Kingdom of Holland, and was therefore granted a stipend by King Louis Napoleon III to travel and study in Paris and Rome.
He left for two years in Paris and then Rome.
In Paris he spent a year and a half, copying and studying paintings from the Louvre and the Academy under the supervision of the famous professor Jacques-Louis David.
He then moved to Rome where he managed to find work in 1809, and remained there longer than expected.
In 1810 he settled permanently in Rome, although he continued to participate in art competitions in the north. In 1836 he married the artist Anna Muschi and in 1839 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion by King William I of the Netherlands.
Teerlink never returned to Holland, but presented works in exhibitions in the Netherlands, which earned him wide recognition. In Rome he became a professor of fine arts. He was also appointed honorary member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and of various other Italian academies.
