Attributable to Gabriele Bella (Venice 1730 – Venice 1799) View of Venice with the Ponte delle Guglie (or de Cannaregio, as it was formerly called) Circa 1750/60 oil on canvas (45 x 60 cm - with frame 58 x 73 cm) The proposed view of Venice, immortalizing the Ponte delle Guglie on the Cannaregio Canal, is a work of excellent quality attributable to Gabriele Bella (Venice 1730 - 1799), one of the protagonists of the grandiose season of Venetian vedutismo of the eighteenth century, whose painting is characterized by an eclectic taste, influenced by the examples of the illustrious Canalettian prototypes. For the quality and type of figures that animate the painting, in addition to the compositional type, noting in particular the rendering of the architectures, the dating is circumscribed to the second half of the eighteenth century; The panorama is rendered with valuable narrative verve, in fact, while maintaining the Canalettian structure, our author freely intervenes in describing the navigation and walking activities that took place daily in Venice, with a scenic composition also derived from Marieschi. Active throughout his career in Venice, Bella worked for a long time exclusively with the Giustiniani, a family of patrons who commissioned him for their home (now home to the Querini-Stampalia art gallery) a grandiose series of about seventy Venetian views, where he described the festive life of the Serenissima in its last century of life. To this group of famous canvases is added a corpus of works that the painter performed for the rest of his client, a series of views of more traditional taste, depicting the places and buildings of prominence, and to which we can also connect our painting. Very well executed, distinguished by a slight luminosity and a chromatic range with delicate colors, enhanced by the contrast between light and shadow, the canvas is a very interesting testimony of eighteenth-century Venice, imbued with a poetry that effectively renders the lagoon atmosphere. The view, in good condition, relined not recently, is enriched by a beautiful gilded frame.
