18th-century Vedutista Painter View of Venice with the Grand Canal, the Punta della Dogana with the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute on the left, the Palazzo Della Zecca with the Ponte della Pescaria and the Granaries on the right. oil on canvas 36 x 45 cm - with frame 52 x 62 cm. Full details (click HERE) The pleasant view, an excellent example of 18th-century Vedutismo, presents one of the most unique glimpses of Venice, wonderfully animated by the presence of small figures. In particular, we see the mouth of the Grand Canal, with the Punta della Dogana from which the two domes of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute stand out, surely the most recognizable building, on the left, in addition to the Seminary palace and the Dogana da Mar complex. On the opposite side of the Canal, teeming with boats, the ancient Zecca building, overlooking the San Marco pier, built in the 16th century with a design by Jacopo Sansovino, is now part of the Marciana National Library; following the Precaria bridge and the imposing Granaries Building. Well executed, characterized by a marked luminosity and a chromatic range with vivid colors enhanced by the contrast between light and shadows, the canvas proves to be a very interesting testimony of 18th-century Venice. We can attribute its paternity to an 18th-century author, inspired by the pictorial style of the Italian Vedutisti, and whose iconography was presumably drawn from the numerous prints of perspective views made through optical cameras. In particular, the glimpse of Venice immortalized in our painting derives, albeit with variations, from a print published by Luca Carlevaris in 1703* entitled Veduta della Zecca sopra la Pescaria. This print was part of a precious collection entitled "Le fabriche, e vedute di Venetia disegnate, poste in prospettiva et intagliate da Luca Carlevarijs" (Reale 1995, pp. 17-47), of over 100 depictions, and constituted the starting point and fundamental model for Venetian Vedutismo of the entire 18th century. Thus, our composition, like countless others, were borrowed by the major painters of the 18th century, including Marieschi, Canaletto, Bellotto, Gabriele Bella.
