The inscriptions and images painted on the body of the brush holder tell a fascinating story.
The text, written in traditional calligraphy, is a partial transposition of one of the most famous works of Chinese literature, the Ode to the Red Cliff by Su Shi.
The images show a detailed landscape with characters.
The piece is signed at the base with the (apocryphal) mark of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty, who reigned from 1662 to 1722.
