IMARI POTICHES PAIR - JAPAN - MEIJI PERIOD
Elegant Pair of Japanese Imari Porcelain Vases with Lids
Estimated Period: Late 19th century (Meiji Period)
This impressive and refined pair of vases with lids embodies the essence of the Imari decorative style (or Arita-yaki), the famous Japanese porcelain exported to Europe from the port of Imari from the 17th century onwards and highly prized for its chromatic richness and its complex ornamentation.
Characteristics and Decoration
Material and Shape: Made of fine glazed porcelain, the vases feature a sturdy, ribbed and slightly flared body, surmounted by a large domed lid. The knob of each lid depicts a Phō dog.
Typical Chromatic Palette: The decoration is executed in the classic and vibrant Imari trichromy:
Cobalt Blue (underglaze): Used for the outlines and some floral details.
Iron Red/Orange (overglaze): Dominant colour for the background and floral motifs.
Gold: Present to enhance the details and give brilliance (typical of the Kinrande style - Imari with gold decorations).
Ornamental Motifs: The surface is densely decorated with a mosaic composition, typical of the late style:
Main Body: The vase is adorned with large oval medallion reserves with lush floral compositions in blue and orange/gold on a white background inside. The reserves are framed by a dense web of minor floral motifs and honeycomb geometries (Kikko motif) in orange, blue and white.
Decorative Bands: The neck and foot feature register bands with stylised floral motifs, including a band at the base with a "petal" or lance design in cobalt blue.
Lid: The lid repeats the dense honeycomb decoration and floral motifs, culminating in the zoomorphic knob.
