PAIR OF PORCELAIN LAMPS - IMARI - EDO PERIOD (1603 - 1868)
Antique Pair of Japanese Imari Porcelain Table Lamps with Gilt Bronze Mounts
Splendid pair of table lamps created from oil lamps in authentic Japanese Imari Porcelain, mounted on gilded bronze bases and finishes that further enhance their majesty.
Characteristics of Imari Porcelain
Richest Decoration: The vases feature the classic, exuberant polychrome decoration typical of Imari porcelain, famous for its bold use of three main colors: underglaze cobalt blue, iron red/orange, and the abundant use of overglaze gold.
Traditional Motifs: The designs include panels and reserves with detailed floral motifs, in particular peonies, chrysanthemums and finely delineated vegetable motifs enriched by colored glazes. There are also elegant butterflies and, in some reserves, an interesting stylized motif that recalls a Pho dog (shishi), a symbol of protection and fortune.
Excellent Conservation: The porcelain is in excellent condition, with the brilliance and depth of color that testify to the high quality of the original manufacture.
Bronze Mounts
Style and Detail: The porcelain is set with refined bronze mounts, which transform the vases into elegant living room lamps.
Bases and Finishes: The square bronze bases, decorated with moldings and fluted details, support the porcelain. Decorative relief rings with laurel leaf or garland motifs surround the neck and base of the vases, adding a neoclassical touch, typical of the fusion between oriental art and European taste.
Upper Filter: The upper part features a perforated bronze element that houses the bulb socket, surmounted by a decorative collar.
