Imposing ceramic plate depicting a phoenix in flight decorated with gold and enamels in relief. The Phoenix is one of the emblems of the Japanese Empire. They call it Ho-o (Ho-ou), which means the immortal bird. For the Japanese it is associated with immortality. Sozan signature. Provenance: Japan Period: Meiji late 19th century.
