American Hammond crescent typewriter, circa 1905.
Hammond crescent typewriter, circa 1905.
The Hammond typewriter is named after its designer, James Bartlett Hammond (1839-1913).
He believed that the typewriter should allow not only the use of different spellings but also characters of different alphabets and languages simply by replacing the type carrier, i.e. a semicircular strip of hardened rubber (lighter metal later) that could be easily replaced.
The advantage of this machine over the competition: the use of multiple interchangeable shuttles with a different style, font and language.
The first patents for the Hammond typewriter were granted on February 3, 1880, practically the first year of production of the Hammond No. 1.
In 1905, the Hammond N.12 was introduced, a machine that looked almost identical to previous models but differed in the introduction of a vibrating ribbon on top of the turret which made it possible to make what was written completely visible and no longer hidden by the central turret.
The Hammond no. 12 was equipped with two different keyboards, ideal and universal.
The typewriter is in good condition and working, it is also complete with its oak wood case with instructions printed inside.
Also present is the original spool tape.
Metal plate with the original Hammond brand on the left side and metal plate with the european dealer's name on the right side.
