MADONNA WITH CHILD
Madonna and Child, polychrome stucco relief, second half of the 15th century.Modelled from the waist up, the Child holds his mother's veil in one hand, the other behind his back, and the Virgin grasps his foot.
This intimate composition was one of the most popular; Allan Marquand listed nine versions, including the one in the Corsini collection in Florence. They are also found on the sculpted jamb of the Ospedale di Santa Maria Nuova in Florence and in the vault of the cloister of Santa Maria di Castello in Genoa. Our stucco relief has a clearly legible relief motif. The polychromy is well preserved, as are the flesh tones and colours of the garments, the richness of which testifies to a prestigious commission.
The relief has undergone conservation restoration, which included cleaning and consolidation of the original colours. Width: 49 cm, depth: 15 cm, height: 54 cm
