17th-century Flemish sculptor Pair of bas-relief panels depicting the Allegory of Spring and the Allegory of Autumn Oak wood Each 45 x 14 cm. Details (link) This is a pair of friezes carved in bas-relief, depicting respectively the Allegory of Autumn, with a male figure holding ears of wheat in his hands, and the Allegory of Spring, personified instead by a female figure holding a flowered basket. Both figures, portrayed standing and seminude as if to evoke two divinities, wrapped only in fluttering drapes, rest on capitals adorned with acanthus leaves, in Renaissance style. The carving that characterizes these bas-reliefs falls within the Flemish production of the seventeenth century, and most likely originally placed on the sides of a fireplace or a door, or set in the wood paneling of a noble palace.
