A pair of spectacular winged angels from the Baroque period Circle of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) Rome, Mid-17th century Sculpted in the round wood, gilded and polychrome Height: 88 cm, Width 50 cm, Depth 60 cm. Splendid pair of angels in sculpted, gilded and polychrome wood, a true masterpiece from the mid-17th century intended for enthusiasts of high-level sculptural works, coming from a prestigious private collection. Regarding the origin, these sculptures, presumably originally located on the sides of an altar in the presbytery area, are part of the most refined production of the Roman Baroque. The vigorous plasticity of the garments that sinuously envelop the figures, the intense expressiveness of the faces, enraptured by a divine vision, and the incisiveness with which the feathered mantles of the large spread wings or the thick locks of hair are carved, recall the most illustrious prototypes of the statuary of one of the greatest protagonists of the Baroque season, Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), from whom our anonymous sculptor was able to wisely draw compositional ideas and formal solutions. It can therefore be assumed that the two wooden statues under examination were produced in a Roman workshop in the second half of the 17th century by an artist with Berninian training, distinguished by that opulent style that dominated the European scene throughout the century, with strong affinities to the works of Ercole Antonio Raggi, known as il Lombardo (Vico Morcote, 1624 - Rome, 1686) or Ercole Ferrata (Pellio Intelvi 1610 - Rome 10 July 1686). Our sculptures are therefore a celebration of the 17th century Italian in the purest Baroque style, of rare beauty, a testament to the glory, faith and greatness of the Eternal City. The presence of most of their original polychromy and gilding, marked by a pleasant crackle, is extraordinary. We can affirm that for their era and conservation they are collector's items, rare on the market and of great scenic effect, which will enhance and amplify the beauty of the home they will embellish. Good state of conservation, original gilding and polychrome. Accompanied by expertise of origin and historical authenticity (FIMA). For any further information, please contact us.
