Late 17th century Pair of kneeling angels Gilded wood, cm 85 x 47 x 33.5 The two angels are made of carved wood and subsequently gilded, as are the clouds on which they are kneeling. The gold reflections become more marked and bright along the plastic drapery of the mantles, while the bodies, faces and the clouds themselves appear in a more veiled and dark tone. The soft lines of the drapery combine perfectly with the turns and volutes of the clouds and the curly hair of both; the couple also seems to be put in dialogue: the angel with his hands joined seeks the gaze of the other who crosses his arms and lowers his head downwards, in a sign of humility or modesty. The sensation of malleability that is conferred to the wood is an indication of the extreme skill of the sculptor, operating in France towards the end of the 17th century, a period in which the Baroque style begins to take on the first features of what will later become the Rococo. These changes developed around motifs already present in the Baroque, reduced to a more human-sized dimension, especially in interior decoration, furniture and applied arts. Although a placid grace less imprinted on the whirling dynamism of the Baroque is perceived, the folds of the clothes and the spiraliform clouds together with the gestures of the arms "move" the two figures making them dialogue. Moreover, the more solemn or at least not so light and playful tone, brings this pair of statues closer to the Baroque taste, still alive in the years immediately after more than a century of cultural, artistic and social hegemony.
