Bas-relief sculptureWhite Istrian marble 19th century Measurements: L.82 x H.60 x D.9 Excellent condition A magnificent image of the "Lion of Saint Mark" in white Istrian marble, masterfully sculpted in bas-relief. It is the famous emblem of the "Serenissima Republic of Venice" and its power, in addition to the symbolic figure of its Protector, the Evangelist Saint Mark. These splendid marble works were affixed to the palaces of the City and throughout the territory of the Venetian domain; many were dispersed after the sack by Napoleonic troops in 1797, who removed a large number of them. It is possible that this artifact was made in the 1800s to replace an older one. The quality of the sculpture is remarkable and stands out for an excellent description of the vigorous anatomy of the depicted Lion. Its expression of strength is exceptional, with its profile gaze and open mouth showing its teeth. The phrase written on the open book, "PAX TIBI MARCE / EVANGELISTA MEVS", stands out. In the frame on the base, a horizontal profile in aquamarine blue marble has been inserted in recent times, centered by a circle in green marble. The marble slab is large and thick, and apart from a small missing piece in the frame, it is in excellent condition with a beautiful, very luminous patina. The real-life vision is truly impressive, with an extraordinary decorative effect regardless of its placement, even in an outdoor environment.
