Christ expiring on the cross, carved and polychrome wood, circle of Anton Maria Maragliano, probably Agostino Storace, Genoa, 18th century
Description
Although the traditional attribution to Maragliano cannot be accepted, the work seems comparable to the crucifixes of Agostino Storace. See in particular the animated drapery due to the sinuous movements deriving from the "Baroque wind" that shakes and agitates. Of the hair, broken down into agitated locks. Or in any case to the immediate circle of the most famous sculptor. The beautiful body, with the rib cage meticulously investigated for the tension of the last spasm, undergoes a slight torsion on the hips underlined by the contracted posture of the legs. The sculpture has probably been repainted.
