Bronze "Devoir" by Ernest Rancoulet This is a magnificent sculptural group in patinated bronze, entitled "Devoir" (Duty), the work of the famous French artist Ernest Rancoulet (1842-1905). The work is an excellent example of the academic and sentimental style typical of French sculpture of the late nineteenth century. The work depicts an allegorical scene that embodies the concept of duty, through three human figures. The sculpture depicts a man and a woman with a child in the middle, symbolizing civic duty. The young man, with a sword, indicates the duty towards the homeland. He is flanked by a man and a woman, who look at him with a mixture of seriousness and encouragement. The woman, standing, rests a hand on the shoulder of the seated man, creating a harmonious and reassuring composition that underlines family and social support. The figures are dressed in draped clothes reminiscent of classical antiquity, evoking a sense of nobility and virtue. The sculpture has a dark patina that enhances the anatomical details and draping of the garments, giving it depth and realism. The circular bronze base is finely crafted and bears the title of the work, "Devoir".
