Female plaster head – Giuseppe Siccardi, Bergamo, early 20th century
Era: Early 20th century
Author: Giuseppe Siccardi
Origin: Bergamo
Material: Plaster
Dimensions: 47 cm (height) × 40 cm (depth) × 38 cm (width)
Description: Refined plaster sculpture depicting a female head. The face, turned upwards and with closed eyes, conveys an intense feeling of surrender and serenity, almost ecstatic. The delicate features, the raised chin, the half-open lips and the dynamically sculpted flowing hair give the work a poetic and introspective quality.
Signed on the base of the neck, the work is by Giuseppe Siccardi, a sculptor active in Bergamo in the first decades of the 20th century. An artist of remarkable stylistic refinement, Siccardi fits into the furrow of post-Romantic Italian sculpture, attentive to both the psychological rendering and the elegance of the form. His works, mainly portraits and busts, are distinguished by the ability to capture the mood of the subjects, blending idealism and realism with a personal touch. This female head is a magnificent example of his poetics, and represents a precious testimony of Italian sculpture of the early 20th century.
