"Putto writing" - alabaster sculpture
Late 19th - early 20th century alabaster sculpture of "Putto writing".
Period: late 19th / early 20th century.
Dimensions: W 18 x D 18 x H 52 cm
Origin: Italy
A subject frequently depicted by Italian sculptors in imitation of Antonio Canova, who had represented a cherub with rounded forms sitting on a masonry block, probably ancient classical ruins, engrossed in the act of writing. Observing more closely, we note, in fact, how the artist paid homage to the great neoclassical sculptor, as the putto, on his heavy tablet, is writing, in block letters, CANOVA.
On the back, the signature: "C. Ghilli".
