Description
Small but intense oil painting on panel by the Livorno master Giovanni Lomi, which well represents his predilection for subjects related to nature and rural life. The work depicts a tender scene of farm life, with a hen and a rooster watching over a brood of chicks of a vivid straw yellow.
The painting is characterized by a pasty and textured brushstroke (evident in the rendering of the plumage and the ground) which gives a sense of energy and concreteness. The composition is balanced, with the animals centrally arranged on a neutral and atmospheric background, typical of Lomi's pictorial language.
The artist, a prominent member of the Gruppo Labronico, excelled in capturing the natural light and moods of the Tuscan countryside, and this little gem is a clear example of it. The work is an excellent collector's piece for lovers of twentieth-century Tuscan painting and the post-Macchiaioli school. It is signed in the lower right ("Lomi") as can be seen in detail.

Giovanni Lomi was an Italian painter, a leading exponent of the Scuola Labronica and the Tuscan post-Macchiaioli tradition.
Essential Biography
Birth and Formation: He was born in Livorno on October 31, 1889. Orphaned at a young age, he prematurely developed a passion for drawing. He did not attend academies, training as a self-taught artist, and worked as a painter and decorator to support himself.
The Decisive Encounter: He was encouraged to pursue painting by Adolfo Tommasi, an already established painter, who, although not taking him as a student, recognized his talent and urged him to develop his own style.
Artistic Career: He joined the Gruppo Labronico and participated in important national exhibitions, including the Venice Biennales and the Rome Quadriennales. He obtained prestigious awards, such as the Bechi prize in 1924. His works were purchased by important institutions, including the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Rome.
Themes: Although he is mainly known for his seascapes and Livorno landscapes, his production also includes portraits and, as in this case, rural scenes with animals, a theme he deeply loved since his childhood spent with a family of farmers.
Style: Lomi was an innovator of the "macchia", using painting from life with great attention to light, colors and the concreteness of reality, avoiding theatricality and focusing on the serenity and recollection of his subjects.
Death: He died in Livorno on June 9, 1969.
