CAFIERO FILIPPELLI (Livorno, 1889-1973) - Bather OIL PAINTING ON panel SIGNED AND DATED 1959 LOWER LEFT FRAME DIMENSIONS: 35X28CM PANEL DIMENSIONS: 12X18CM Marked by a childhood of sad vicissitudes, he soon revealed a predisposition for drawing and painting, encouraged by acquaintances and even the guards who had once caught him drawing on the sidewalk. He attended the School of Art and Crafts and, after obtaining his license, won the "Banti" scholarship. He was thus sent to Florence to attend the Academy of Fine Arts and the School of Nude, where he met Giovanni Fattori and Galileo Chini. Back in Livorno, he went to work in a factory to support his family, which had formed in the meantime, but he continued to paint everything around him. He joined the Gruppo Labronico and loved to paint the Tuscan countryside and portray family members. His scenes of domestic life are created with a sensitive touch and chromatic richness, often the low light coming from old lamps creates effects of great suggestion and a sense of recollection around a simple, calm, and serene reality. A painting founded on a deep investigation capable of penetrating the essence of things and immediately recognizable for the meditative sense on the life and work of people, on the mystery and beauty of nature. In 1922 he participated in the Florentine Primavera exhibition and his painting was purchased by the Galleria d'Arte Moderna. He took part in important exhibitions such as the Turin Quadrennial (1923), the Rome Biennale (1923) and Venice (1926), the Turin Promotrice (1926). Until late in life he continued his activity exhibiting successfully in various parts of Italy. His works can be found in important museums in Rome, Florence, Turin, Novara.
