"SEA STORM" - GIUSEPPE CASELLI (1893 - 1976)
This fascinating painting, the work of the Ligurian painter Giuseppe Caselli (1893-1976), captures the power and beauty of the sea.The artist, known for his vibrant and luminous seascapes, paints a coastal scene that is both dramatic and serene.
The painting depicts a seascape where foamy waves crash forcefully against a rocky cliff on the left. The color palette is expertly balanced, with tones of aquamarine and turquoise blending into the deep blue of the sea. The white foam of the waves creates a strong dynamic contrast, highlighting the incessant movement of the water. The sky, painted with shades of pastel pink and soft orange, suggests a sunrise or sunset, giving the scene an atmosphere of calm and suggestion.
Caselli's brushstroke is visibly textured, especially in the areas of the waves and rocks, where the color is applied thickly to accentuate relief and texture. This technique makes the representation of the sea not only visually vivid but almost tactile.
The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right corner and can be dated to the 1930s.
The dimensions are: 108 x 88 including the frame, 100 x 80 for the canvas alone.
Giuseppe Guglielmo Umberto Caselli, known as Pino (Luzzara, July 5, 1893 – La Spezia, December 19, 1976), was an Italian painter.
Born in 1893 in the locality of Villarotta di Luzzara (Reggio Emilia), he trained at the Free School of the Nude at the Academy of Florence. Returning to La Spezia, where he had resided since childhood, he was a student of Del Santo and Discovolo.
He came into contact with the artistic environment that gravitated around the new magazine L'Eroica of the La Spezia writer Ettore Cozzani and dedicated himself to xylographic engraving. In 1913 he met Lorenzo Viani.
During the First World War he was taken prisoner and interned in the Mauthausen prison camp in Austria; from this experience he drew numerous works that foreshadowed the drama of the subsequent conflict.
His painting, initially inspired by the early Divisionist experiences of the early 20th century, arrives at a personal expressionism, close to the innovative Austrian movements, but also to the poetics of Viani. Many of his works are inspired by memories of imprisonment.
With works of aeropainting, in 1933 he exhibited at the Premio del Golfo organized by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and will participate in many of the subsequent editions.
Very attached to La Spezia, he paints the many aspects of the city and its province, of Lunigiana and the nearby Cinque Terre in particular.
The Centro Allende of La Spezia in 1981 dedicated a posthumous anthological exhibition to him.
