The authenticity of the painting as an original work by David Rijckaert III was established in 2015 by Dr Fred Meijer, director of the RKD (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistoische Documentatie, The Hague) and confirmed by him in an email correspondence from October 2020. This moralistic scene illustrates the Dutch proverb 'Zo de ouden zongen, zo piepen ook de jongen' ('As the old sang, so the young pipe'), i.e. children learn from the parents, both good and bad things. Here, the older peasants are shown drinking and smoking; equally the children to the left and right have their little clay pipes and cups with drinks. One little child to the right is even being sick on the floor. The proverb was a favourite subject of Golden Age Dutch and Flemish painters such as Jan Steen and Jacob Jordaens. Ryckert himself has treated the subject in several variations (e.g., the works in the, Szépmüvészeti Muzeum, Budapest and the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden). The present painting convinces through its fine painterly quality. The figures in the foreground are no stock characters, but 'real people' with their individual traits. David Rijckaert III. spent his entire working life in Antwerp where he became Master of the St Luke's Guild in 1636-37 and its Dean in 1652-53. He is known for his often coarse peasant scenes which show a clear influence of Adriaen Brouwer and the two David Teniers. Rijckaert was clearly held in high esteem by his contemporaries, for when Peter Paul Rubens was charged with the organisation of the decorations for the arrival of the new Governor, he hired Rijckaert together with Jan van Eyck to paint the final triumphal arch.
