Joseph Bail (1862-1921): LA MÉNAGÈRE oil on canvas 81cm x 65.5cm signed lower right Provenance: Christies (New York), 30.4.2001, Lot 96 Sotheby's (London), 10.12.2014, Lot 126 Joseph Bail specialized in still lifes, with kitchen interiors being a common motif. "La Ménagère" is one of his most important paintings. His art can be recognized by the brilliant color palette and the masterful execution of the light reflections on surfaces such as metal and glass. The Ménagère has been painted several times, a larger version is in the Musée D'Orsay and a smaller one was sold at Christie's New York in 2012.
